No. 20 Mary Washington Women's Basketball Beats Shenandoah; Moves to 4-0

The Mary Washington women's basketball team took down Shenandoah, 58-57, on Saturday afternoon and moved to 4-0 on the young 2023-24 season.

It wasn't an easy victory for the Eagles as they fought through 16 total lead changes before finally pulling away in the last three seconds with a pair of clutch Jordan Carpenter free throws that extended the Eagles' lead to four.

Ashley Martin led Mary Washington in scoring with 15 points, while Carpenter trailed behind her with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Baxter added 11 more points for the Eagles in their win.

On the defensive end, UMW forced Shenandoah into 22 total turnovers and allowed the Hornets to shoot just eight free throws. The Eagles, meanwhile, picked up 21 points on free throws and attempted 29 of them.

Mary Washington started out fast as it took a 37-28 lead into halftime. In the second half, Mary Washington led the entire way as the Hornets were able to tie the score but couldn't get over the hump.

The Eagles finish out their weekend in Ashland, Va. with a matchup with Randolph-Macon on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
