Martin and Martin's OT Scores Lift UMW Women Past Randolph-Macon, 84-79

Junior guard Ashley Martin (Centreville, Va.) and senior forward Tory Martin (Centreville, Va.) each scored four points in overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to an 84-79 victory over visiting Randolph-Macon College on Monday night at Ron Rosner Arena. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season.

In the first quarter, play remained tight in the opening five minutes, as neither team held more than a four-point lead. A jumper from sophomore Jordan Carpenter (Chesterfield, Va.) gave UMW a 12-6 advantage with 4:45 left in the frame, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a three pointer and a pair of free throws to draw to 12-11, and tied the score twice down the stretch, but a three-pointer from sophomore Keagan Schwab (Fairfax Station, Va.) gave the Eagles a 24-20 lead after one.

The Eagles led through the second, with the lead moving between three and nine points. A Tory Martin jumper with 41 second left gave the Eagles a 10-point cushion at 41-31, but RMC scored the last five, and UMW held a 41-36 lead at halftime.

After the teams traded baskets to open the third, UMW used an 8-0 run to lead, 52-42, with 5:41 left, with four different players scoring. After a 6-2 RMC spurt, UMW built the lead back to 10, 61-51, to close the third.

The Eagles upped the lead to 11 on a Megan Baxter (Chantilly, Va.) free throw, but a 14-2 Yellow Jacket run put the guests ahead, 69-68, with 4:43 remaining in regulation. Tory Martin answered to put the Eagles back in front with 4:27 left, and hit another with 2:07 to go to give the Eagles a three-point advantage. RMC hit a three pointer with 34 seconds left to tie the score, and the game went to overtime, tied 74-74.

In the extra frame, Ashley Martin opened the scoring with a pair of free throws, but the Eagles trailed after another Yellow Jacket three with 4:23 to go. Schwab made a runner in the lane to put UMW back on top, 78-77, with 3:32 remaining, but the Jackets regained the lead with 3:04 left. From there, the Eagles held the Jackets scoreless, while Tory Martin added a jumper and two free throws, and Ashley Martin added another layup for the 84-79 final.

Tory Martin paced the Eagles with 24 points on 10-17 shooting and added eight rebounds, while Ashley Martin posted 16 points, shooting 6-9. Schwab scored 15 points, and Carpenter had 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Mary Washington shot 52.2% from the field (36-69), making 2-7 three pointers and 10-17 free throws. RMC shot 37.5% (27-72), making 10-27 three point tries and 15-19 free throws. The Eagles controlled the boards, 46-38.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Southern Virginia University at 6:00 p.m.
