The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 73-68 decision at Washington & Lee University on Tuesday night in Lexington, Va. The Eagles fall for the first time this season, dropping to 5-1 overall.
In a back-and-forth affair that remained tight throughout, both teams fought to a close battle in the first, as neither team would find more than a two-possession lead until late in the first, when five straight Generals points gave them a five-point cushion at 21-16. A jumper by junior Molly Sharman capped the period and drawing UMW back to within three at 21-18 after 10 minutes.
The Eagles continued to fight into the second, and a three-pointer from Adeline Riner connected on a three pointer to give the Eagles a 29-28 lead with 5:51 remaining before halftime. Three lead changes followed, and UMW trailed, 36-34, at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Generals went on a 12-1 run midway through the frame to take a 50-39 advantage. From there, the Eagles had to battle back, from an 11-point deficit to start the fourth quarter. UMW was able to come as close as five at the final horn.
Sophomore Jordan Carpenter scored a team-high 14 points and added 12 rebounds, while freshman Megan Baxter scored 11 points, and junior Ashley Martin added 10 points.
UMW shot 37.5% from the field (27-72), making 1-17 three pointers and 13-20 free throws. W&L shot 34.9% from the floor, making 5-24 three point tries and 24-29 free throws.
The Eagles will be back in action on Monday, when they host Randolph-Macon College at 6:00 p.m.
