Harper, Carpenter Lift UMW Women Past NC Wesleyan, 78-72

Senior guard Bri Harper scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore Jordan Carpenter added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 78-72 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday in Virginia Beach. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season.

After a tight first quarter that saw the lead swing back and forth, the score stood tied at 13-13 after 10 minutes of play. The Eagles used a decisive 26-12 outburst in the second to take the lead for good, and a 39-25 advantage to intermission.

The Bishops outscored the Eagles in each of the third and fourth quarters, and were able to draw even at 69-69 with 3:41 to play. Harper answered with a pair of jumpers, and Carpenter added a free throw to push the lead back to five at 74-69 with 2:07 to go. Another Caprenter score upped the lead to eight, and the Bishops would draw no closer than two scores the rest of the way. 

Harper went 7-9 from the field, making both of her three-point tries as well as both of her free throw attempts. Carpenter went 5-7 from the field en route to 12 points, and had six rebounds on both offense and defense. Freshman guard Megan Baxter was the third Eagle in double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-9 shooting with a pair of three pointers. 

UMW shot 47.7% from the field (31-65), making 7-18 three point attempts and 9-18 free throws. N.C. Wesleyan shot 36.8% (21-57), making 8-20 three-point attempts and 22-39 free throws.The Eagles outrebounded the Bishops, 44-34.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday night when they visit Washington & Lee University at 5:30 p.m. UMW is 5-0 for the first time since 2016-17, when the Eagles won their first 15 contests.
