Balanced Attack Lifts UMW Women Past Meredith, 69-41

Seven different players scored at least six points as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Meredith College, 69-41, on Saturday afternoon at the Virginia Wesleyan University Tipoff Tournament. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

UMW sseized control from the opening tip, outscoring the Avenging Angels, 22-8, in the first quarter, and 19-10 in the second to carry a 41-18 lead to halftime. After being outscored in the third, UMW limited Meredith to six fourth quarter points in a 69-41 decision.

Freshman guard Megan Baxter led the Eagles with 10 points, while senior guard Bri Harper added nine and junior guard Ashley Martin scored eight. Sophomore Jordan Carpenter scored six and led with eight rebounds, and junior guad Molly Sharman led with four assists.

The Eagles shot 40.3% from the field (27-67), making 5-16 three-point attempts and 10-14 free throws. Meredith shot 26.8% (15-56), making 2-11 three point tries and 9-15 free throws. UMW led in rebounds, 44-34. The Eagle bench scored 40 points in the contest, and UMW forced 20 Angel turnovers.

The Eagles will face North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday at 2:00 in Virginia Beach.
