UMW Women Fall to Shenandoah, 44-32, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 44-32 decision to Shenandoah University on Wednesday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 13-5 on the season.

In the first quarter, the teams traded baskets in the early going, before the Eagles scored the final five points of the frame, all from freshman Ashley Martin. In the second, baskets from Martin and freshman Carolina Brusch extended UMW's lead to 17-9, but the Hornets scored nine straight points to grab the lead at intermission, 18-17.

The third quarter saw the Hornets extend their cushion, as the Eagles continued to struggle from the floor. A pair of baskets from junior Tory Martin with trimmed the margin to 24-21, but a 7-0 run over the next few minutes upped the visitors' lead to 31-21 with 16 seconds left. A pair of Maddie Shifflett free throws cut the margin back to 31-23 to close the frame.

In the fourth, freshman Bri Harper converted a three-point play to cut the gap to 31-26, and Harper added another bucket to keep the margin at five with 6:14 remaining. Shenandoah would close the game with an 11-4 run.

The Eagles were led by Ashley Martin's seven points and three rebounds, while Shifflett added five boards. UMW shot 13-55 from the floor (23.6%), making 1-9 three point attempts and 5-6 free throws. Shenandoah shot 19-43 (44.2%), making 1-6 three pointers and 5-11 free throws. The Hornets led in rebounding, 40-29.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit York College of Pa. for a 1 p.m. tipoff in Capital Athletic Conference action.
