UMW Women’s Basketball Falls to CNU, 63-37, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport University, 63-37, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles slip to 13-4 overall, and 2-1 in the CAC. Junior Tory Martin scored 12 points to lead the Eagles. 

Martin got the Eagles going early as she scored the first four points of the game and gave UMW a 4-2 lead just 1:33 into the game. CNU picked up their press and caused havoc for the Eagles as they failed to score over the next six minutes until Emily Thompson knocked down a jump shot. CNU closed with a three-pointer and that gave them a 12-8 lead at the end of the first.

The Captains began the second quarter by going on a 16-3 run to take a 28-11 lead with 4:24 to play in the second. Bri Harper knocked down a three-pointer with 4:04 left to put the game at 28-14. Faith St. Clair and Natalie Brennan both knocked down two free throws a piece to pull UMW within 12, 30-18, at the half. 

CNU scored an early bucket in the third quarter, but two free throws from Martin kept the game at 12, 32-20. The Captains went on a run and found themselves up 48-21 with 2:12 left in the third quarter. Ashley Martin closed the quarter with three free throws and that put the score at 48-24.

The Captains maintained their lead in the fourth quarter to take the game 63-37.

UMW shot 10-43 (23.3%) from the field, 2-8 (25.0%) from three-point range, and 15-27 (55.6%) from the free throw line. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Shenandoah at 6 p.m.
