UMW Women's Basketball Falls to Widener in St. Mary's Tourney Final

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dug itself a large deficit before halftime and nearly climbed all the way back in a 72-69 loss to Widener University on Sunday in the championship of the St. Mary's College One Love Seahawk Invitational. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.

After gaining a small lead in the first quarter with a 16-13 lead, the Pride outscored the Eagles, 23-12, in the second. UMW outscored Widener by 11 points in the third and fourth quarters, only to come up just short.

The Eagles were led by junior forward Tory Martin and junior guard Madison Shifflett, who each scored 21 points. Martin made 7-10 field goals and 7-11 free throws, and also reeled in nine rebounds. Shifflett made 9-13 shots, including 2-4 three pointers and added eight rebounds. Martin gained all-tournament team honors.

UMW shot 25-61 from the floor making 3-18 three point tries, and 16-25 free throws. Widener shot 24-51 from the field, making 8-16 three point shots, and 16-20 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 37-29. 

Mary Washington will be back in action on Friday when they host Lehman College at 7 p.m. as part of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament.
