Katie Wimmer Accepts Full-Time Teaching and Coaching Position at Independence High School

Former University of Mary Washington women's basketball All-American and assistant coach Katie Wimmer has accepted a full-time teaching and coaching position at Independence High School in Loudon County.

"Saying goodbye to Katie is bittersweet for myself and for the program", said UMW head coach Deena Applebury. "As an assistant coach, Katie's knowledge and love for the game were invaluable and she has been a huge contributor to the success of our team. It was a pleasure to be Katie's coach when she was a player, and it has been an honor to coach alongside her for the past three years. I am sad to see her leave, but I am excited to watch her continue her coaching journey in northern Virginia."

As a player, Wimmer was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams in 2009, 2010, and 2012, and led the team to a 30-1 record her final season. Her class finished their careers with an overall record of 95-19. Wimmer was a three-year team captain and served as a representative for the UMW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She was named CAC Rookie of the Year in 2009, Second Team All-Conference in 2010 and 2011, and First Team All-Conference in 2012. In 2012, Wimmer was also named to the D3Hoops All-Region Team, First Team VaSID All-State, and named an All-American.

After graduating from UMW, Wimmer coached at her alma mater, James Madison High School, where the team won the Liberty District Championship and made it to the second round of the Northern Regional Tournament. In 2015 she became the assistant coach at Wesley College, where she holds a Master's Degree in Sport Leadership.

For the past three years, she has helped guide the Eagles as assistant coach, as UMW has won 52 contests.
