UMW Women's Basketball Falls at Christopher Newport in CAC Semifinal, 72-53

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 72-53 loss at Christopher Newport University on Thursday night in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal. The Eagles finish with a 14-13 overall record.

The Eagles started the game with a flourish, jumping out to a 12-2 lead over the first five minutes. The Captains responded with a 10-1 run to draw to within 13-12 with 3:34 left in the quarter. After the teams traded baskets, CNU went ahead with a three point basket, and did not trail again. 

In the second quarter, CNU ran out to a 10-3 stretch to open the frame over the first 3:20 to expand its lead to 30-21. After back to back three pointers, the hosts built the lead to double figures, where they would lead, 43-32, at halftime.

The Captains used a 21-5 third quarter margin to extend its lead to 64-37, and despite the Eagles rallying to outscore the Captains, 16-8, the Captains move on to the championship with a 72-53 victory.

The Eagles shot 42.1% from the field (16-38), making 0-4 three point attempts and 21-28 free throws. CNU shot 40% (26-65), making 9-30 three point attempts and 11-16 free throws. 

Freshman Erika Carter led the Eagles with 19 points on 7-12 shooting from the floor, while senior Jordan Pamlanye added 13 to go with 10 rebounds.
