The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team topped Frostburg St. University, 65-54, on Tuesday evening in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Eagles improve to 14-12 overall, and will advance to the semifinals to play CNU. Senior Jordan Pamlanye led the Eagles with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
In the early going, UMW played outstanding defense as they didn't allow a single point until the 3:09 mark left in the first quarter. The Eagles took advantage as they scored the first 12 points of the game. Erika Carter began the game with a made free throw, Kayla Sakyi knocked down two more free throws, and Emily Thompson then made a three-pointer. Tory Martin then added six straight points to put UMW up 12-0. Carter made the last two baskets of the quarter for the Eagles and they took a 16-5 lead into the second quarter.
The Bobcats began the second quarter with a made layup, but UMW went on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 24-9 with 5:14 to play. Frostburg then went on an 8-2 run to get their deficit into single digits, 26-17. Martin capped the scoring in the half with 1:47 left to put UMW ahead 28-17.
Frostburg began the first 3:02 of the third quarter on an 8-2 run to get within five, 30-25. Pamlanye knocked down a free throw to get UMW up six, but a three-pointer from the Bobcats cut the Eagles' lead to three, 31-28 with 5:31 to play. UMW grew their lead back to five, 35-30, after a three-point play from Pamlanye. Martin scooped home a layup with 53 seconds left that extended the UMW lead to six, 39-33, but a bucket from the Bobcats with 29 seconds left put the score at 39-35 going into the fourth quarter.
Martin began the fourth quarter with a layup just 32 seconds in to go up 41-35. Frostburg then scored four straight points to get within two. A Faith St. Clair jumper ended that run and gave the Eagles a four point advantage, 43-39, with 5:24 left. Over the next 4:27, the Eagles went scoreless and Frostburg capitalized as they went on a 7-0 run to take a 46-43 lead. With 56 seconds to play, Emily Thompson made a three-pointer to tie the game at 46 a piece.
The Bobcats retook the lead on a three-pointer with 30 seconds left. FSU then knocked down a free throw after a turnover, but Thompson nailed a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to get UMW within one, 50-49. The Bobcats then missed two free throws to give the Eagles a chance and Thompson scooped home a difficult layup to give UMW a 51-50 lead. FSU got fouled with .4 seconds left and made 1-2 free throws to take the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Eagles scored the first seven points as Pamlanye made a layup, Thompson knocked down a three-pointer, and then Pamlanye made another layup to give them a 58-51 lead with two minutes remaining. After a free throw from the Bobcats, Pamlanye and Sakyi both went 2-2 from the line to extend the UMW lead to 62-52. Sakyi made two more free throws and Pamlanye made one more to help UMW win, 65-54.
Thompson added 17, while Martin had 12 points. Carter produced seven points and eight rebounds.
The Eagles advance to the CAC semifinals where they will travel to CNU to play at a time TBD.
