UMW Women's Basketball Tops York, 73-56; Gains Home Game in CAC Tournament

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team shot a blazing 29-35 from the free throw line (including a record 12-12 from Jordan Pamlanye) in defeating York College of Pa., 73-56, in the regular season finale at York on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles will host a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament first round game on Tuesday against fifth-seeded Frostburg State University.

Both teams' offenses started strongly, with 35 points scored in the opening stanza. Junior Emily Thompson opened the proceedings with a three pointer, but the Spartans shot well enough to stay close throughout, with neither team leading by more than three. With the score tied near the end of the frame, Pamlanye scored six straight Eagle points, and UMW carried a 19-16 lead to the second quarter.

The Eagle offense continued to click in the second quarter, as they duplicated their 19-point effort from the first, all the while limiting the Spartans to 11. After York drew to within 21-19, the Eagles scored nine straight, keyed by four points from sophomore Kayla Sakyi and capped by a Thompson three pointer. York drained a pair of three pointers to pull to within five, but Carter scored back to back baskets, and her free throw on a three point play gave the Eagles a 38-27 halftime lead.

York started the third quarter on an 8-3 run, but Pamlanye scored four points and Sakyi three to extend the lead back to double figures at 49-37 with 4:15 left in the quarter. Carter scored four straight and Pamlanye added a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a 14-point cushion as the period expired.

In the final quarter, the Eagles were in abonus situation for much of the time, and although York scored on its end, the Eagles continued to connect from the free throw line, and cruised to the 17-point victory.

Pamlanye's 12-12 performance from the line betters the school record for most makes without a miss in a game in program history. Carter led the Eagles with 20 points, shooting 8-13 from the field, while Pamlanye and Thompson each scored 16. Sakyi was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 11.

Mary Washington shot 51.3% from the field (20-39), making 4-11 three point tries and 29-35 free throws. York shot 31.7% from the field (19-60), making 8-31 three pointers and 10-15 free throws. UMW dominated the boards, leading 43-22 in rebounding.

The Eagles will host fifth seeded Frostburg State University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the CAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
