UMW Women's Basketball Falls at Christopher Newport, 62-42

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell at Christopher Newport University, 62-42, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Newport News, Va. Senior Jordan Pamlanye scored a team-high 16 points and added a career-high 18 rebounds for the Eagles, now 10-11 overall and 4-6 in league play.

The game stayed tight throughout the opening 10 minutes, as the Eagles started with a 5-2 lead, thanks to three points from freshman Erika Carter and a basket from Pamlanye. A basket from sophomore Kayla Sakyi regained the lead for the Eagles, and a basket from freshman Thora Gibbs extended the margin to 10-7 before a Captains' three pointer once again knotted the score at 10-10 with 1:50 left. Baskets from Pamlanye and Carter kept the score tied, and a pair of Pamlanye free throws gave the Eagles a 16-14 lead after the first quarter.

Both offenses stalled in the second quarter, with the Captains scoring eight points and the Eagles six, leading to a 22-22 tie at halftime. Pamlanye continued to score and dominate the boards, with a double-double at halftime.

CNU built a 30-24 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but an Emily Thompson three pointer kept the Eagles close in stemming the tide. Four straight points from sophomore Tory Martin tied the score at 31-31 with 4:37 left, but preceded an 11-0 CNU run into the waning seconds of the frame. UMW trailed, 43-34, after 30 minutes.

In the fourth, CNU continued to add to its lead, extending the final margin to 62-42. The hosts made 8-13 shots in the frame, while the Eagles made just 3-13. 

Pamlanye led the Eagles with 16 points on 6-12 shooting from the floor, and added a career-high 18 rebounds. Carter added eight points for the Eagles.

Mary Washington shot 30.2% from the floor (16-53), making 2-9 three point attempts and 8-12 free throws. CNU shot 35.4% (23-65), making 10-26 three point tries and 6-12 free throws. The Eagles, led by Pamlaye's efforts, led in rebounding, 47-40.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles host St. Mary's College at 6:00 p.m.
