UMW Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime to Southern Virginia, 66-58, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Southern Virginia University in overtime, 66-58, on Wednesday evening in the Anderson Center. The Eagles slip to 9-9 overall, and 3-4 in the CAC. Junior Emily Thompson led the team with 16 points. 

Thompson got the Eagles ahead early, 3-1, as she knocked down a three-pointer 1:07 into the game. After SVU took a 6-3 lead, Jordan Pamlanye converted a three-point play to tie the game up with 6:38 left in the first quarter. The Knights extended their lead to 14-10 with 5:25 to play. A made layup by Meghan Comer and then a layup by Tory Martin brought the Eagles within two, 18-16, with 1:03 left in the quarter. SVU added three points before the end of the quarter to take a 21-16 advantage.

SVU added to their lead and took a 10 point advantage 26-16, just 1:48 into the second quarter. Morgan Conner ended the run with a free throw and then Thora Gibbs knocked down a jump shot to get UMW within nine, 28-19. After being down 30-21, the Eagles scored five straight to get within four, 30-26, with 3:29 to play in the half. SVU scored three points before the half to take a 33-26 lead.

Thompson made an early three-pointer in the second half to put the Eagles within six, 35-29. The Knights then went on an 8-0 run to take a 43-29 advantage with 5:21 to play. UMW then went on a 12-0 run that was capped by an Alannah Miller three-pointer to put them down just two with 1:29 remaining. SVU scored the last basket of the quarter to take a 45-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

After an early basket by SVU, Conner followed it up with a jump shot to keep the Eagles down just four, 47-43. Tory Martin scooped home a layup with 6:42 remaining to bring the Eagles within just one point, 49-48. Thompson then tied the game up at 50 as she nailed a jump shot. Martin kept the Eagles tied as she made a layup with 4:35 remaining. The Knights then took a 55-52 lead with 1:05 to play. Kayla Sakyi tied the game up at 55 a piece as she knocked down a three-pointer off of an assist by Martin. The Eagles then caused a turnover and held for the last shot but just missed and the game went to overtime tied at 55.

In overtime, the Eagles struggled to put the ball in the basket and SVU took advantage as they scored the first nine points to go up 64-55. UMW scored their first points of overtime with seven-seconds remaining in the game as Pamlanye scored a three-point play. SVU then knocked down free throws to seal the game 66-58.

Pamlanye scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Martin added 10 points and six rebounds. 

UMW shot 22-67 (32.8%) from the field, 6-19 (31.6%) from the three-point line, and 8-14 (57.1%) from the free throw line.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will host Frostburg St. at 1 p.m.
