UMW Women’s Basketball Falls to York, 69-64, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to York College, 69-64, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles slip to 9-8 overall, and 3-3 in the CAC. Emily Thompson led UMW with 24 points.

UMW jumped out on York in the early going as they went up 6-2, in the first 3:37. Thompson account for four points and Pamlanye added a layup. The Eagles upped their lead to six, 12-6, on two Pamlanye free throws with 3:20 left in the quarter. After York cut it to four, Thompson knocked down a three-pointer and Pamlanye added a layup to go up 17-8 with 1:24 to play in the quarter. Meghan Comer scooped home a layup with 34 seconds left to put UMW up 19-10 going into the second quarter.

The Eagles extended their lead to 17, 27-10, just one minute into the second quarter as Thompson added two three-pointers and Pamlanye made another layup. With 7:15 to go in the second quarter, Tory Martin knocked down a jumper to give the Eagles their largest lead of the quarter at 18. York then went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 10, 35-25. The two teams then played even over the last part of the quarter but Martin made a free throw with two seconds left to put UMW up 40-28 at the half.

Carter began the third quarter with a layup to push the Eagles' lead to 14, 42-28. The Spartans then went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to six, 42-36. UMW scored their only other points of the quarter on a Pamlanye layup with 2:39 to play. From there, York closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 46-44 lead. 

Martin tied the game up at 46 a piece just 49 seconds into the fourth quarter. York took the lead again and made it 57-48 with 5:21 to play. UMW clawed their way back into the game and went down five, 60-55, on two free throws from Pamlanye. Comer put the game at 62-58 on a free throw and then Thompson made a three-pointer to cut the Spartans lead to one with 44 seconds remaining. York knocked down four free throws to go up 66-61 with 33 seconds left. On the ensuing possession for the Eagles, Thompson got fouled and made three free throws to get within two, 66-64. York missed a free throw and the Eagles came down to tie the game up for three but came up just short. 

Pamlanye added 19 points on 8-9 shooting from the floor, and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Martin scored 11 points off the bench.

UMW shot 23-52 (44.4%) from the field, 5-15 (33.3%) from the three-point line, and 13-20 (65.0%) from the free throw line. The Eagles dished out 11 assists and created five steals. UMW out-rebounded York 37-36.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Southern Virginia at 6 p.m.
