UMW Women’s Basketball Falls to Salisbury, 57-48, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Salisbury University, 57-48, on Wednesday evening in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles slip to 7-7 overall, and 1-2 in the CAC. Tory Martin led the team with 19 points on 8-16 shooting from the field.

In the early going, Salisbury scored the first bucket to take an early lead but Tory Martin answered with a three-point play to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead 48 seconds into the game. The Seagulls retook the lead and extended their lead to five, 9-4, with 7:15 to play in the quarter. Jordan Pamlanye completed a three-point play and then Thora Gibbs made a layup that brought UMW within two, 11-9. Salisbury scored five unanswered and the Eagles were scoreless over the next 4:53 as the Seagulls built a seven point advantage, 16-9. Kayla Sakyi drilled a three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining and the Eagles were down 17-12 going into the second quarter.

After an early three-pointer in the second quarter for Salisbury, Martin answered as she made a driving layup to put the game at 20-14 with 8:24 to play. The Seagulls went on a 6-0 run to up their lead to 12, 26-14, with 5:49 remaining. Martin made two consecutive layups from there and brought the game back within eight. Erika Carter made a tough layup on an assist from Meghan Comer to put the Eagles back just nine, 30-21. With 1:56 left in the half, Martin made a layup and then Emily Thompson got free for her first shot of the half as she nailed a three-pointer to bring UMW within six, 32-26. The Seagulls knocked down a free throw right before the half ended and they took a 33-26 lead into the half. 

Salisbury added to their lead as they scored the first four points of the third quarter to take a 37-26 lead. A Thompson layup, two free throws by Martin, and a free throw by Pamlanye brought the Eagles within six, 37-31, with 5:04 left in the quarter. UMW got within four, 39-35, as Martin added another layup. The Seagulls ended the quarter by scoring the last six points to take a 45-35 advantage into the fourth.

The Eagles began the fourth quarter with made free throw and layup from Pamlanye to get within seven, 45-38. Martin added another layup on an assist from Thompson to get within five, 57-42, with 5:38 to play. After a Thompson layup with 4:40 left that kept the Eagles within five, 49-44, UMW went scoreless for the next four minutes. Salisbury took advantage of that and they knocked down free throws at the end of the game.

Pamlanye finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Thompson added eight points and four rebounds for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to Penn St.-Harrisburg for a game set at 1 p.m.
