Junior Emily Thompson scored 18 points and senior Jordan Pamlanye added 12 points to go along with eight rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team past Virginia Wesleyan University, 63-41, on Wednesday afternoon in Puerto Rico. The Eagles are now 6-5 on the season.

In the first quarter, the two teams kept the game tight. The Marlins took an early 4-2 lead before Thompson drained a three-pointer to give the Eagles their first lead of the night at 5-4. With 5:05 to play, Virginia Wesleyan took an 8-7 lead and extended it to 13-7 just two minutes later. Over the last 3:37 to play, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run that was fueled by four points from Thora Gibbs and a layup from Meghan Comer to tie the game at 13 going into the second quarter.

UMW continued their run in the second quarter as they scored the first 11 points to take a 24-13 lead with 5:24 remaining. Thompson made two three-pointers over that span. Kayla Sakyi kept the Eagles up eight, 27-19, as she made a layup with 1:35 to play. The Marlins scored the last bucket of the half and the Eagles were up 27-21.

VWU scored just one second into the quarter to get within four, 27-23, but Erika Carter made a layup and Comer knocked down a three-pointer to get the lead to nine, 32-23. With 6:29 to play, Pamlanye made a layup and then Thompson followed that up with a layup of her own to go up 41-27. Over the next 4:49, UMW went cold as they didn't score a single point but still played excellent defense as they only gave up four points. Tory Martin ended the run with a layup and then Pamlanye capped the scoring in the quarter with 19 seconds to play and the Eagles were up 45-33 going into the fourth.

UMW scored the first 10 points of the half and held the Marlins scoreless over the first 5:16 to take a 55-33 lead. In that run, Sakyi made a three-pointer, Pamlanye contributed five points, and Carter made a layup. Each team scored eight points over the last 4:44, and the Eagles held on to win 63-41.

Sakyi scored nine points off the bench, while Carter added eight points. Comer had six points and six rebounds. 

UMW shot 24-52 (46.2%) from the field, 6-16 (37.5%) from three-point range, and 9-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line. The Eagles out-rebounded the Marlins 43-26 and dished out 10 assists. 

The Eagles will be back in action in the next calendar year as they will travel to Frostburg St. on January 2nd at 6 p.m.
