UMW Women's Basketball Falls to Randolph-Macon, 65-60, on Tuesday Night

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 65-60 decision to Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. Senior Jordan Pamlanye led the Eagles (4-3) with 20 points.

Mary Washington opened with a three point basket from junior Emily Thompson, and a pair of Maddie Shifflett baskets gave UMW a 7-4 lead with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter. Randolph-Macon knotted the score with a three pointer, and the score stood tied at 9-9, before UMW scored seven of the final nine points of the frame, including a buzzer beating three pointer from Shifflett, giving UMW a 16-11 lead after 10 minutes.

In the second, Tory Martin connected for a pair of free throws to grow the lead to 18-11 before a Yellow Jacket three pointer trimmed the margin to 18-14 with 9:44 left. Another Jacket three cut the margin to 18-17, but baskets from pamlanye and freshman Erika Carter extended UMW's lead to 22-17 with 7:15 on the clock. After Pamlanye scored a pair off ree throws, RMC connected for another three pointer, and the score stood at 25-20 in the Eagles' favor with 5:24 before halftime. The lead remained at five at 31-26 on a Martin free throw, but the Yellow Jackets closed with a 5-0 run to knot the score at intermission, 31-31.

Shifflett opened the third quarter with a layup before Randolph-Macon connected for a free throw and layup to take their first lead, 34-33, with 9:15 remaining. The Eagles answered with a basket from senior Meghan Comer, and a pair of Pamlanye free throws gave UMW a 37-34 lead with 7:14 left. The teams then traded pointsuntil 2:06 remaining, when a Yellow Jacket layup gave the visitors a 42-41 advantage. An RMC jumper with four seconds left gave the guests a 48-45 advantage after 30 minutes.

RMC opened the fourth with a pair of baskets to take a seven-point lead at 52-45 with 8:30 on the clock. Pamlanye answered with a basket and Thompson hit another triple to cut the margin to 52-50 with 7:23 to go. The Eagles knotted the score at 56-56 with 3:20 left on a Pamlanye bucket, but the Jackets answered with five straight points to grab a 61-56 edge with 1:41 left. A poair of Emily Shively free throws trimmed the margin to 61-58, but the Jackets connected for four straight free throws down the stretch for the five-point margin.

The Eagles shot 39.3% from the floor (22-56), making 3-13 three point tries and 13-16 free throws. Randolph-Macon made 25-64 shots (25-64), with 4-21 on three pointers and 11-15 from the free throw line. The Jackets held a 43-37 edge in rebounding.

Pamlanye led the Eagles with 20 points on 8-10 field goals and 4-4 from the charity stripe, and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Shifflett added 13 points for the Eagles. Kelly Williams led RMC with 23 points.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Marymount University at 1:00 p.m.
