The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team shot 48% from the floor and limited visiting University of Lynchburg to 15 field goals in a 64-49 victory on Tuesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles even their record at 2-2 on the season.
UMW built an early lead in the first quarter. After Lynchburg grabbed a 5-4 lead midway through the frame, the Eagles finished with a 9-0 run to lead, 13-5, after 10 minutes. Freshman Erika Carter led the way with five points, while sophomore Kayla Sakyi added four in the period.
In the second quarter, the Eagles opened with baskets from Maddie Shifflett and Emily Shively to run the lead to 12, before four straight from the Hornets trimmed the lead back to eight. Six straight points from Lynchburg trimmed the margin to 23-18 with 4:25 remaining, and the Hornets cut the deficit to three, at 25-22, with 2:29 to go. The Eagles used a basket from senior Meghan Comer and a pair of free throws from senior Jordan Pamlanye to lead, 29-22, at halftime.
After Lynchburg cut the deficit to four to start thr third, UMW upped the margin to 12 on a Tory Martin layup with 3:35 left, 42-30. After the team traded three pointers, Lynchburg hit yet another triple before Comer's basket gave UMW a 47-36 lead with 18 seconds left. Lynchburg capped the scoring to reach a 47-38 score heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, Comer opened the scoring and Emily Thompson connected for a pair of three pointers to give UMW a 17-point lead at 55-38 with 7:14 left. The lead swelled to 19 on a Shifflett layup, and the Eagle defense limited Lynchburg to three points in the final 2:42 for the 64-49 win.
Shifflett led all scorers with 15 points, while Thompson scored 11 and Comer 10. Lynchburg was led by Molly Shephard's 11.
UMW shot 23-48 from the floor (47.9%), making 4-17 three point attempts and 14-22 free throws. Lynchburg shot 15-55 from the field (27.3%), making 7-22 three point tries and 12-21 free throws. UMW edged the Hornets, 37-36, in rebounds.
The Eagles will return to action next Tuesday when they visit North Carolina Wesleyan College at 6:00 p.m.
