UMW Women’s Basketball Falls to Johns Hopkins, 50-47, in Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament Championship

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Johns Hopkins University, 50-47, in the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon in Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 1-2 on the season.

JHU took an early lead on the Eagles 4-0 in the first 1:18 of the game. They increased their lead to eight, 10-2, after a three-pointer with 6:50 left to play in the first quarter. A free throw from Jordan Pamlanye and a layup by Maddie Shifflett put the Eagles down five, 10-5. The two teams didn't score over the next three minutes of play until the Blue Jays made a layup. Tory Martin then made a layup and Emily Shively knocked down a free throw to pull the Eagles within four, 12-8, going into the second half.

Johns Hopkins again stretched their lead to seven, 16-9, just 1:51 into the second quarter. Emily Thompson knocked down a jumper to cut it to five, but the Blue Jays answered back with a three-pointer to go back up eight, 19-11 with 3:32 remaining in the half. Erika Carter made two layups before the half, but the Eagles couldn't get any closer as they went down 25-15 at the half.

The Blue Jays came out hot in the second half as they went up 18, 35-17 with 6:47 to play in the third quarter. The Eagles then proceeded to go on a 6-0 run that was fueled by a three-pointer from Shively and a free throw and layup from Martin. After that run, the Blue Jays pushed their lead back to 17, 43-26, with 1:17 remaining in the quarter. UMW got a jumper from Shifflett and then a three-pointer from Shively to cut the lead to 12, 43-31 and head into the fourth quarter. 

The Eagles made it interesting in the fourth quarter as they cut the Blue Jays lead to single digits, 58-42, on a layup from Martin just 2:37 into the fourth. With 3:56 left, Shifflett knocked down two free throws and the Eagles found themselves down seven, 45-38. A jumper from Thompson and then two free throws by Pamlanye put UMW down three, 45-42, with just 48 seconds to play. The Blue Jays made clutch free throws at the end of the game and they held on to win 50-47.

Thompson and Shively led the way with nine points a piece, while Shifflett and Martin added eight points each. The Eagles were out-rebounded 43-33, and they dished out six assists. 

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host Lynchburg with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
