UMW Women’s Basketball Team Falls to CNU, 80-53, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team was defeated 80-53 by Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night in Ron Rosner arena. The Eagles slip to 13-11 overall, and 12-5 in the CAC. Freshman Tory Martin led UMW with 18 points. 

CNU got off to a fast start as they scored the first 15 points of the game. Freshman Emily Miller put an end to that run as she hit a jump shot with 4:51 left. Kendall Parker knocked down two free throws with just under three minutes to play to cut the lead to 11, 17-6. Martin capped the scoring for the Eagles with 54 seconds left as she knocked down two free throws. CNU took a 25-8 lead into the second quarter.

Just eight seconds into the second quarter Emily Thompson completed a three-point play to cut the lead to 14, 25-11. Martin scored the next eight points for the Eagles with the last two coming with 3:21 remaining in the second quarter that put UMW down 17, 36-19. Parker made a jump shot with 19 seconds left, but the Captains hit their second buzzer beating three-pointer to end the half and they took a 41-21 lead into halftime. Martin led the Eagles with 10 points in the first half.

CNU started the second half with four straight points until Madison Shifflett knocked down a three-pointer with 8:23 left to put the score at 45-24. Parker knocked down a three-pointer with 4:39 left in the third quarter to put an end to a Captains run. Thompson knocked down a step-back jump shot with 3:22 remaining to put the score at 61-33. Parker capped the scoring for the third quarter with a three-pointer and the Captains held a 66-36 lead to go into the fourth quarter.

UMW went on a 9-2 run over the first 3:23 to cut the lead to 23, 68-45. The Captains answered with a 7-0 run and push the score to 75-45. Parker knocked down two three-pointers in the last 2 minutes and the Captains won the game 80-53.

Parker scored 16 points as she made four three-pointers. Taylor Barton and Miller both hauled in six rebounds. Sam Porter led the Captains with 17 points. 

The Eagles shot 47.7% (21-44) from the field, making 5-11 three-pointers, and 6-9 free throws. The Captains shot 37.3% (25-67) from the field, making 9-21 three-pointers, and 21-25 free throws.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they face Marymount for a tip-off set at 1 p.m.
