Kendall Parker and McKenzie Jenkins scored 16 points a piece to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team past Frostburg St. University on Thursday night in Frostburg, MD. The Eagles improve to 12-10 overall, and 11-4 in the CAC.
In the early going, UMW jumped out to a little bit of a lead as they got it up to 6-3 just 2:21 into the game on buckets from Meghan Comer, McKenzie Jenkins, and Madison Shifflett. Jenkins buried a three-pointer with 6:53 left in the first quarter to push the lead to four, 9-5. Frostburg St. took the lead, 12-11, with 4:13 left as they went on a 7-2 run. With 42 seconds left freshman Tory Martin completed a three point play, the old fashioned way, to give UMW a 17-14 lead. The Bobcats made a layup with just five-seconds left, and the Eagles led 17-16 going into the second quarter.
To begin the second quarter, Shifflett made three free throws to push the lead to four, 20-16. With 5:47 left in the second, the Bobcats cut the lead to two, 23-21. From there, UMW went on a 12-2 run to extend the lead to 35-23 with just over three minutes remaining. Frostburg St. cut it to 10, 35-25, but another three-pointer from Jenkins gave the Eagles the largest lead of the first half at 15, 40-25. Kendall Parker made a free throw with three-seconds remaining in the half to put UMW up 41-28.
Coming out of halftime, UMW went on a 6-2 run over the first 2:06 as Jordan Pamlanye scored three of the points and put the Eagles up 47-30. The two teams traded off baskets over the next 2:33 and UMW maintained their 17 point lead of 49-32. With 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, the Bobcats cut the lead to 11, 50-39. The Eagles closed out the quarter on a good note as they got the lead back up to 14, 59-45.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the fourth quarter as both teams did not score over the first two minutes. After the two teams scored a few buckets, Jenkins made a layup to keep the lead at 14, 63-49, with 5:55 left in the game. Parker nailed a three-pointer with 3:21 left in the game to push the lead to 16, 69-53. Shifflett made a layup that gave UMW their largest lead of the game at 18, 71-53, with 2:38 left. Over the next 2:13 Frostburg St. went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to seven, 71-64 with 25 seconds left. The Eagles knocked down some late free throws and won the game 75-67.
Jenkins shot 6-10 from the field, and 4-7 from three-point range. Shifflett pitched in 14 points to go along with seven rebounds in the game. Pamlanye scored seven points hauled in a team-high nine rebounds. Victoria Yoder led the Bobcats in scoring with 13 points.
The Eagles shot 40.0% (22-55) from the field, making 9-18 three-pointers, and 22-30 free throws. The Bobcats shot 33.3% (22-66) from the field, making 8-29 three-pointers, and 15-18 free throws. UMW out rebounded Frostburg St. 46-36 and dished out 16 assists.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Wesley for a tip-off set for 1 p.m.
