Balanced Scoring Leads UMW Past York, 76-65, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to take down York College of Pa., 76-65, on Saturday afternoon in Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 8-9 overall, and 7-3 in the CAC. McKenzie Jenkins led four Eagles in double figures with 15 points.

UMW got out to a hot start as Shifflett and Jenkins both nailed three-pointers in the first 1:17 to give them the lead 6-0. Jenkins made another three-pointer with 7:24 left to give the Eagles an eight point lead, 10-2. Over the next 1:18, the Spartans used a quick 6-0 run to go down by two, 10-8. Emily Thompson came off the bench and hit two three-pointers in a row to give UMW a 16-11 lead with 3:36 left. Freshman Tory Martin knocked down two late free throws and the Eagles took the first quarter 20-16.

The Spartans used a 6-2 run over the first 2:25 to tie the game up at 22. Thompson drained another three-pointer with 5:37 left in the second quarter to put the Eagles up 29-24. The Spartans went on an 8-0 run and took the lead 32-29 with 3:43 left. Kendall Parker knocked down a three-pointer and then a jumper to take back the lead and UMW was up 37-34 with 46 seconds left. Jenkins made a free throw with 13 seconds left and the Eagles took a 38-36 lead into halftime. 

Out of halftime, the Eagles went on a 10-3 run and pushed the lead to 48-39 with 5:44 left in the third quarter. Thompson made a layup with 5:05 left to keep the lead at 9, 50-41. The Spartans came back and were down by four, 53-49, with 1:17 left. Parker and Jenkins made free throws late in the third quarter that would keep UMW ahead 56-52 going into the fourth quarter. 

Senior Taylor Barton made two layups 1:57 into the fourth quarter to put UMW up 60-53. The Spartans used a free throw and a three-pointer to cut the lead to three, 60-57, with 6:04 to play. Barton, Jenkins, and Martin made consecutive layups to stretch the lead out to 68-59 with 3:33 left in the game. Jordan Pamlanye made a layup with 1:44 left to give UMW it's largest lead of the night, 74-61. The Eagles would then close it out and take the win 76-65.

Thompson scored 13 points, while Meghan Comer and Parker both contributed 10 points each. Barton added eight points and Martin scored seven points. Katie Wagner led the Spartans in scoring with 15 points. 

The Eagles shot 49.1% (27-55) from the field, making 8-19 three pointers, and 14-24 free throws. The Spartans shot 37.5% (21-56) from the field, making 4-25 three-pointers, and 19-28 free throws. UMW out rebounded York 40-29 and the Eagles dished out 17 assists.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. as they host Southern Virginia.
