The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 98-43 decision at 10th ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 7-9 on the season, and 6-3 in league play.
After CNU scored the opening basket, UMW answered with a three pointer from junior Meghan Comer to take the lead with 8:25 left in the first. From there, the Captains went on a 22-0 run over the next six minutes, with a jumper from junior Jordan Pamlanye stopping the run with 2:04 remaining. The Captains scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 31-5 lead after one quarter.
In the second, Pamlanye continued to rebound the ball well, and connected on a free throw and layup to move the score to 32-8 with 7:17 left before halftime. The Captains continued to shoot well down the stretch, while the Eagles gained free throws from Claire Mocarski and McKenzie Jenkins, and an Emily Thompson free throw in the final minute moved the score to 53-13 at intermission.
UMW responded in the third quarter, scoring 21 points to cut into the Captains' lead. Senior Taylor Barton opened the scoring with a pair of baskets, including a three point play, and freshman Madison Shifflett followed with another three point play. Thompson folowed with a three point play with 5:51 remaining in the third to move the score to 62-24, and free throws from Thompson and Pamlanye and a basket from Comer moved the score to 70-30 with 2:06 remaining.
A basket from Jenkins and two more free throws from Thompson moved the score to 72-34 with one period left to play. In the fourth, CNU outscored the Eagles, 26-9, with senior Kendall Parker scoring UMW's final five points.
The Eagles were led by Pamlanye's eight points and 16 rebounds, and Thompson's eight points as well. The Eagles shot 19.3% from the field (11-57), making 2-18 three point attempts and 19-29 free throws. CNU shot 41.7% (30-72), making 15-35 three point attempts and 23-32 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 51-48, while the Captains committed 14 turnovers to 33 for the Eagles.
Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host York College at 1:00 p.m.
