Late Run Lifts UMW to a 67-54 Win Over Penn St.-Harrisburg on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a key 18-4 run over the last 7:10 of the game to defeat Penn St.-Harrisburg, 67-54, on Saturday afternoon in Harrisburg, PA. The Eagles improve to 6-7 overall, and 5-1 in the CAC. Junior McKenzie Jenkins led the Eagles with 13 points coming off the bench.

In the early going, The Nittany Lions went up 7-2 just 2:57 into the game. UMW responded and went on a 9-0 run with six of those points coming from senior Kendall Parker to give them the lead 11-7 with 5:03 left in the first quarter. Junior Jordan Pamlanye hit two free throws with 1:34 remaining in the first quarter to push the lead to 16-10. Pamlanye knocked down two more free throws and made a layup with seven seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 22-13 lead going into the second quarter.

The Nittany Lions again started out the quarter hot, as they scored the first seven points 1:18 in and cut the lead to 22-20. Jenkins knocked down a three-pointer to end the run and push the lead to 25-20 with 8:04 remaining. Sophomore Ashlee Warren made a layup with 4:54 left for UMW to lead 27-23. Jenkins nailed another three-pointer with 3:16 left to push the lead back to 5, 30-25, with 3:16 left. Madison Shifflett closed the scoring of the second quarter on a layup with 1:35 left, and the Eagles went into halftime up 32-28.

At the start of the third quarter, Kayla Sakyi made a layup and Pamlanye drained a jumper 46 seconds in to give the Eagles a six point lead, 36-30. Over the next 5:01, Penn St.-Harrisburg went on a 10-3 run to take the lead 40-39. Freshman Claire Mocarski put an end to that run as she scored the next three points and tied the game up, 42-42, with 3:18 remaining. Emily Miller hit a three-pointer with 36 seconds left in the third quarter to put the Eagles ahead 48-44 headed into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Nittany Lions took the lead, 50-49, on a three-pointer with 7:36 left. Mocarski netted four straight points to take the lead 53-50, and it also put UMW back ahead for good. Shifflett buried a three-pointer with 3:21 left in the game to give the Eagles a 63-52 lead. From there, Jenkins converted four free throws to close out the game and give UMW a 67-54 win. 

Shifflett scored 11 points and Pamlanye added 10 points for the Eagles. Mocarski scored a career-high nine points to go along with five rebounds. The Nittany Lions were led by Tessa Dolce who scored 18 points.

The Eagles shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field, making 10-18 three-pointers, and 13-23 free throws. The Nittany Lions shot 36.2% (17-47) from the field, making 7-31 three-pointers, and 13-19 free throws. UMW out rebounded Penn St.-Harrisburg 35-33. The Eagles dished out 15 assists and had 10 steals.

UMW will be back in action Wednesday night as they host Frostburg St. in a CAC matchup that will start at 6 p.m.
