YORK, Pa. - Mary Washington senior center Brianne Comden was selected as the 2017 CAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year to lead the All-CAC Women's Basketball Team, while Frostburg State's Victoria Diggs and Carrie Saunders, and Christopher Newport's Bill Broderick collected the other major awards.
Brianne Comden, a three-time All-CAC first team honoree, becomes the fourth UMW player and first since the 2007-08 season to earn Player of the Year accolades. A 2016 All-America honorable mention pick by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, Comden helped guide the Eagles to their third straight CAC title game appearance this season.
Frostburg State's Victoria Diggs received Rookie of the Year honors, becoming the first Bobcat to claim the award. A sophomore academically, Diggs completed her first year of collegiate basketball in 2016-17, helping the Bobcats reach the CAC postseason for the first time since 2012-13.
Also securing a top award for Frostburg State was third-year head coach Carrie Saunders, who was named the "Bill Finney" CAC Co-Coach of the Year. After going winless in conference play in 2015-16, Saunders led a remarkable turnaround this winter, guiding the Bobcats to a 10-8 mark in conference play and 12-14 overall record. Saunders is the first Frostburg State coach to receive Coach of the Year accolades.
Sharing the "Bill Finney" Co-Coach of the Year award with Saunders was Christopher Newport boss Bill Broderick. Broderick led the Captains to both the CAC regular season and tournament championships in 2016-17, marking the first time the Captains secured the CAC crown. It is the first CAC Coach of the Year accolade for Broderick.
Christopher Newport and Mary Washington each led the way with a trio of all-star selections. Comden represented UMW on the first team, while senior guard Megan Green and junior guard Kendall Parker earned second team recognition. Green was a repeast second team all-star, with Parker landing on the All-CAC team for the first time in her career.
CNU also placed one on the first team and two on the second team. Junior forward Sam Porter headlined the Captains' selections on the first team. Porter was also a first team all-star in 2016. Junior forward Devon Byrd and junior guard Makenzie Fancher were both repeat second team selections.
York also placed multiple players on the 2017 all-star team. Senior forward Sam Hruz collected the third All-CAC award of her career, landing on the first team for the second straight season. Hruz was a second team pick in 2015 as a sophomore. Junior foward Morgan Kuehne represented the Spartans on the all-conference second team, the first all-star nod of her career.
Marymount, Salisbury, St. Mary's, and Frostburg State were each represented by one player on the All-CAC squad.
St. Mary's senior center Nina Haller made her way onto the All-CAC team for the third straight season, earning first team accolades for the first time. Haller was a second team pick in both 2015 and 2016.
Marymount junior guard Leah Hurst and Salisbury senior guard Lauren Rothfeld were each named to the first team, picking up the first All-CAC honors of their careers.
Frostburg State senior forward Kirsten Rayner rounded out the All-CAC selections with second team honors, marking her first career all-star recognition.
