In the first matchup of 15-0 women's basketball teams in league history between the ninth ranked University of Mary Washington and sixth ranked Christopher Newport University, the Eagles dropped a 75-67 decision after a furious fourth quarter comeback on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. The Eagles drop to 15-1 overall, and 8-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Captains started the first quarter on a roll as they were able to build a early 12 point lead after the teams traded baskets to start the game. Then sophomore Jordan Pamlanye and junior Kendall Parker provided a spark by scoring 12 of UMW's next 14 points off the bench to close out the quarter and cut down CNU's lead to 23-18.

But the Eagles weren't able to keep the momentum going in the second, as the Captains hit jumper after jumper for a 12-2 run to start the quarter, growing their margin to 15 at 35-20 with 5:56 left in the half. UMW then went on a run of 9-5 to trim the margin down to 11 by the end of the half, with Pamlanye ending the quarter with UMW's last four points in the last minute to put the halftime score at 40-29.

To start the third quarter, sophomore Meghan Comer would make a layup to start a mini-run by UMW to cut the deficit to eight, but CNU would respond to bring the margin to 17 with 4:39 left in the third. Then for the rest of the frame, the Eagles fought their way back after alternating baskets from both teams to cut the deficit to only 10 through the bunch scoring from Parker.

The Eagles made a run to start the fourth, as Megan Green and Parker each connected to cut the margin to five points with 7:33 left in the game. But for the next seven minutes the Eagles and Captains went back and forth until there was only 33 seconds left in the game with CNU leading 71-67.

Mary Washington fouled the Captains in the waning seconds, and CNU converted to keep the advantage.

Pamlanye scored a career high 16 points on 7-10 shooting off the bench, and 2-4 from the free throw line. Parker scored 16, making 6-6 free throws, and hit 2-4 on threes.

UMW shot 39.3% from the field (22-56), including 3-11 on three point tries and 20-25 from the foul line. CNU shot 37.9% from the field (22-58), making 7-21 three point attempts and 24-32 free throws. The Eagles were outrebounded by CNU, 49-27.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday for Special Olympics Night when the Eagles host the York College Spartans, who are 12-4 on the season. Tipoff is set for 5:00 in Ron Rosner Arena.
