#14 UMW Women's Basketball Team Improves to 11-0 with 70-44 Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

Three players reached double figures as the 14th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Gwynedd Mercy College, 70-44, on Thursday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. as part of the Land of Magic Classic. The Eagles move to 11-0 to start the season.

The first quarter saw the Eagles start by scoring the first four points, including a Megan Green three pointer, but the Griffins answered with eight straight points and led, 8-4, with 5:45 left in the quarter. Gwynedd Mercy hit three three-pointers to close the quarter and led, 17-11, after 10 minutes.

In the second, the Eagles showed their trademark defense, allowing just three points in erasing a six-point deficit and building a seven-point advantage. Junior Kendall Parker scored 10 points in the frame, including a three pointer to end the frame. UMW led at intermission, 27-20.

The Eagles gradually pulled away in the third, with senior Brianne Comden scoring nine points, as UMW's lead grew to 14, 45-31, with 10 minutes to play.

In the fourth, UMW exploded for 25 points to cruise to the 26-point win. Comden scored eight points in the frame, as seven different Eagles registered points.

Comden led the Eagles with 22 points, including a 12-14 performance from the free throw line, and also added eight rebounds. Parker scored 19 points on 6-13 shooting, including 3-8 three pointers and 4-4 on free throws. Green scored 10 points and added three assists.

The Eagles shot 35.6% from the floor (21-59), making 7-28 three pointers and 21-26 free throws. The Griffins shot 26.4% (14-53), making 7-17 three pointers and 9-19 free throws. UMW led in rebounds, 43-37.

Mary Washington will return to action on Janury 5 when they host Salisbury University at 6:00 pm in a key Capital Athletic Conference game.
