Junior guard Kendall Parker scored a game-high 22 points on 8-16 shooting, and junior forward Taylor Barton added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds to lead the 14th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 71-49 victory over Brooklyn College on Thursday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. in the Land of Magic Classic. The Eagles improve their season-opening win streak to ten games.
The Eagles came out strong, leading 14-2 after 5:40 of action. Barton and senior Brianne Comden each had a pair of baskets, and senior guard Megan Green and Parker each had three. In the opening run, UMW forced five missed shots and four turnovers.
UMW pushed the margin to 20-9 on a pair of Elizabeth Dofflemyer layups, before the Bulldogs added a late basket to cut the score to 20-9, Eagles, after one quarter.
In the second, UMW continued to build a healthy lead, outscoring Brooklyn, 20-11. After the teams traded three pointers to start the second, UMW reeled off 13 straight points over the next 6:11 to lead, 36-12, with 4:01 left before halftime. Barton led the way with seven in the run. Brooklyn scored the final seven points of the quarter to trim the deficit to 40-20 at intermission.
Brooklyn made several runs to try to cut into the significant spread to open the third, and cut the margin to 15 at 45-30 with 2:00 left, but a Parker three pointer and three baskets in the final minute gave the Eagles a 54-32 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Parker hit three three pointers in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, and the Eagles never looked back in the 22-point win. Parker made 8-16 field goals, including 5-9 three pointers en route to 22 points while Barton shot 4-7 from the floor and 6-7 from the charity stripe for her 14 points.
The Eagles shot 47.4% from the field (27-57), making 8-16 three pointers and 9-12 free throws. Brooklyn shot 30.9% (17-55), making 6-20 three pointers and 9-23 free throws. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 40-33.
UMW will be back in action on Friday in Orlando when they face Gwynedd Mercy College at 3:00 p.m.
