Dofflemyer's Late Surge Leads #16 UMW Women's Basketball Past Marymount, 54-45, in Saturday CAC Showdown

Sophomore guard Elizabeth Dofflemyer scored a team-high 16 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 54-45 victory over visiting Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 8-0 overall, and 4-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles limited Marymount to just five first quarter points en route to an 11-point lead after 10 minutes. The Eagles scored the first eight points, and used six points from junior Kendall Parker to build an 11-point lead. Parker sank three free throws with less than a second left in the frame.

The Saints' offense awakened in the latter stages of the second quarter, cutting a 13-point UMW led to five, 26-21, at halftime, by using an 8-2 run to close the period. Five different Eagles scored in the quarter.

In the third, the offense continued to be at a premium. After the Eagles used baskets from Dofflemyer and Brianne Comden to build the lead to nine, at 30-21 with 7:15 remaining, the Saints chipped away, and used a 7-2 run to close the frame to return the lead for the Eagles to five, at 36-31, to start the fourth.

After Marymount started the quarter cutting the deficit to three, Dofflemyer connected on a pair of three pointers to give UMW a 42-35 advantage. Meghan Comer and Difflemyer posted six points to build the lead to 46-35 4:05 to go, and Marymount would come no closer than six the rest of the way, as Dofflemyer hit four of four free throws down the stretch, with Comden adding a pair, for the 54-45 win.

Dofflemyer hit her last eight shots, four from the field and four from the line, en route to 16 points, to go with six rebounds and a team-high four assists. Comden scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Barton hauled in eight boards for UMW.

The Eagles shot 35.3% from the field (18-51), including 4-15 three pointers and 14-17 free throws. Marymount shot 32.7% (17-52), making 5-13 three pointers and 6-9 free throws. UMW held a 42-28 advantage on the boards.

Mary Washington will return to action next Saturday when they host Emory & Henry College at 1:00 p.m. Anyone bringing a new unwrapped toy will receive free admission to the game. Toys will be donated to Rappahannock United Way.
