Comden Scores 19 to Lead #17 UMW Women's Basketball Past York, 57-46, on Saturday

Senior All-American center Brianne Comden scored 19 points on 8-12 shooting to lead the 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 57-46 victory at York College of Pa. in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday. The Eagles improve to 6-0 overall, and 2-0 in CAC play.

The action in the first quarter was tight, with neither team holding more than a three-point lead until York connected on a free throw with two seconds left to take an 11-8 lead into quarter number two. Comden scored the first two baskets for the Eagles, accounting for half of the team's offense in the first.

After York doubled its lead to open the second on a three pointer, Comden and junior Taylor Barton responded with baskets to cut the deficit to two, 14-12, with 7:36 left until haltime. After a Spartan basket upped the lead to four, UMW answered with a 13-0 run, punctuated by a Kendall Parker three pointer with 1:09 left, to give Eagles a 25-16 cushion. After a three-point play from York and a Comden free throw, UMW carried a 26-19 lead to intermission.

York again opened the thrid quarter with a three pointer, but again UMW rallied, scoring the next eight points to expand its lead to 34-22 with 6:25 left in the frame. Comden netted six of the eight points. The Spartans closed the quarter on a 6-1 run, trimming the deficit to four to start the fourth, 40-36.

The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of the fourth, before a three pointer from Parker and a Comden layup pushed the lead to nine, at 51-42. The Eagles would sink six straight free throws down the stretcht while allowing one basket for the 57-46 victory.

Comden scored 19 points by going 8-12 from the floor and 3-4 from the free throw line, and was joined in double figures by Parker, who added 10 points. Jordan Pamlanye and Barton each had eight for the Eagles, who was led in rebounds and assist by sophomore Elizabeth Dofflemyer, with nine and six, respectively.

UMW shot 45.8% from the field (22-48), making 2-14 three point attempts and 11-14 free throws. York shot 34% (17-50), making 5-20 three pointers and 7-13 free throws. UMW led in rebounding, 36-29.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday night when they visit St. Mary's College of Md. at 6:00 p.m. in another road CAC contest.
