The 21st ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team outscored visiting Lynchburg College, 17-7, in overtime, to run away with a 69-59 victory on Tuesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles, who received double-double performances from senior Brianne Comden and sophomore Elizabeth Dofflemyer, improve to 4-0 on the season.
The first quarter saw the Eagles gain an early edge despite shooting woes from the floor. UMW led, 7-4, with 4:29 remaining in the quarter thanks to a Megan Green jumper, but the Hornets answered with six straight points to lead, 10-7, with 2:40 to go. Junior Kendall Parker scored an old fashioned three point play with 1:01 to play, and the score stayed tied at 10-10 entering the second quarter.
UMW used a pair of three pointers from sophomore McKenzie Jenkins to build a four-point lead at 18-14 with 7:27 left before halftime. Four straight points fromCaroline Naumann evened the score for the fifth time in the game, 18-18, with 6:04 left, and LC surged ahead to a five-point lead at 25-20 with 3:02 remaining. A pair of Comden layups trimmed the Eagle deficit to one, 27-26, by intermission.
The Eagles offense, as it has in each game this season, came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Hornets, 19-11, led by Kelsey Dean's five points, and four each from Comden, Dofflemyer, and Green. UMW shot 50% for the quarter (8-16), while holding Lynchburg to 3-12.
Lynchburg thrived on both ends of the floor in the fourth, scoring 14 points and holding UMW to seven. LC had a 6-0 run with 7:02 to play to tie the score at 48-48, and took a brief lead before Dofflemyer made a layup with 1:15 left. After a turnover on a Hornet inbound play with two seconds left, Dofflemyer was fouled with the Eagles not in the bonus. After the referees met, it was determined Dofflemyer was not shooting, and UMW's last-second inbound play could not result in a score, so the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, UMW jumped ahead and never trailed, as Green started the period with a three pointer, followed by baskets from Meghan Comer and Dofflemyer. Green added another basket to give UMW a 61-52,and after the teams traded free throws, UMW led, 63-54, with 59 seconds left.
A three pointer from LC cut the deficit to seven, but four free throws returned the lead to 10, at 67-57 with 25 seconds left. Bartoin hit a pair of free throws before Lynchburg made a late layup to push the final to 69-59.
UMW was led by Comden's 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Dofflemyer added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Green scored 16 points to go with two steals.
The Eagles shot 43.1% from the floor (25-58) including 4-14 three pointers and also made 15-22 free throws. Lynchburg shot 31.3% (21-67), making 2016 three pointers and 15-17 free throws. UMW led in rebounding, 49-36.
UMW will be back in action next Wednesday when they host Frostburg State University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 6:00 p.m.
