Tournament Most Valuable Player Kendall Parker scored 15 points to lead the 20th/22nd ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 73-53 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday in the championship of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Marlins provided a tough challenge early for the Eagles, jumping out to a five point lead in the early going, 7-2. After the Eagles responded with five straight points to tie the score, Va. Wesleyan regained the lead, and led by as many as four at 15-11, before layups from senior Megan Green and sophomore Elizabeth Dofflemyer tied the score to close the first quarter, 15-15.

In the second, Dofflemyer scored five straight to put UMW ahead, 20-15, and after a Taylor Barton layup and a pair of Dofflemyer free throws, the Eagles led by nine, at 24-15. The margin would move back and forth between five and eight points through the close of the second quarter, with Green's three-point play giving the Eagles a 36-28 advantage at intermission.

The Eagles started the third quarter on a 13-0 run, led by eight points from senior Brianne Comden. Va. Wesleyan was held scoreless for the first 4:42 of the frame. After UMW upped the advantage to 21 points, the Marlins responded with an 11-0 run of their own to close the gap to 10 at 49-39 with 2:42 remaining. But the Eagles would score the final seven points of the quarter to lead, 56-39, entering the fourth quarter.

Again UMW started quickly in the fourth, scoring the first 10 points, with four players scoring. UMW led by as many as 28 points, with the Marlins scoring the final six points close make the final 73-53.

Parker scored 15 points on 3-8 shooting from the field and 7-10 from the foul line. Comden scored 15 points on 7-14 shooting, and Dofflemyer, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Kelsey Dean, who scored a career-high 14 points on Saturday, added six points and seven rebounds to also gain all-tournament honors.

UMW shot 48.1% from the field (25-52), making 4-14 three pointers and 19-28 free throws. The Marlins shot 30.2% (16-53), with 2-20 on three pointers and 19-27 on free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 48-24.

Mary Washington will host Lynchburg College on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
