Parker's 25 Points Leads Four in Double Figures as #20/#22 UMW Women's Basketball Tops W&L, 79-64, in Season Opener

Junior guard Kendall Parker connected on 5-7 three point attempts en route to a game-high 25 points to lead four Eagles in double figures as the 20th/22nd ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Washington & Lee University, 79-64, on Tuesday night in Lexington, Va.

The opening quarter consisted of back and forth scoring, with three lead changes and neither team holding more than a three point lead for the first eight minutes. The Eagles opened up the biggest lead of the frame on a Megan Green three pointer with 1:30 to go to advance their lead to 21-16, but the Generals answered with four straight to finish the period with UMW holding a 21-20 edge.

In the second, Parker heated up, making 3-4 shots, including a pair from distance, and senior All-America center Brianne Comden added six points from the floor on 3-3 shooting, as UMW built a six-point lead at halftime, 39-33.

The third period remained tight, with UMW outscoring the hosts, 17-16, keyed by five points each from parker and sophomore Elizabeth Dofflemyer, who finished the night with 10 points. The final quarter saw the Eagles post 23 points on 62.5% shooting, and also converted on 11-16 free throws in the frame.

Parker ended with 25 points in 25 minutes on 7-10 shooting, including 5-7 three pointers, and also shot 6-8 from the free throw line. Comden scored 14 points on 6-12 shooting, while Taylor Barton scored 11 points and added five rebounds. Dofflemyer scored 10 and added a team-high seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot 48.1% from the field 26-54), making 9-16 three pointers and 18-28 free throws. W&L shot 35.2% (25-71), making 5-30 three point attempts, and 9-15 free throws. The Generals held a 40-38 rebounding edge.

Mary Washington will return to action in their home opener on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. when they host Alvernia University as part of the UMW Tipoff Tournament.
