Comden Named to VaSID Women's Basketball College Division All-State Team

WINCHESTER, Va. – CIAA champion Virginia Union dominates the VaSID College Division All-State women's basketball team in selections announced Friday by the organization.

The Panthers, who advanced to the DII Elite Eight in addition to winning the CIAA championship, cap their season by seeing Kiana Johnson earn Player of the Year honors and AnnMarie Gilbert Coach of the Year accolades.

Lady Walker gives VUU a third honoree with her selection to the All-State second team.

Taylor Blevins, from Emory and Henry College, completes the major honorees by being named Rookie of the Year.

Johnson was named as the WBCA Division II and CIAA Player of the Year after leading the nation in scoring at 29.2 points per game.

That scoring helped Gilbert, in her first year heading up the Virginia Union program, lead the Panthers to a No. 4 final national ranking.

Virginia Union was also Atlantic Region champions.

The Rookie of the Year honor is the third for Blevins, as she was named as the ODAC RoY in February and the D3hoops.com RoY in March. Blevins led the Wasps in scoring and earned second team All-ODAC honors.

A total of nine schools were represented on the 10-woman All-State squad with only Virginia Union, with Johnson on first team and Walker on the second team, having more than one honoree.

The ODAC had three of the five first team selections in Randolph-Macon's Katie Anderson, Jess Rheinheimer from Eastern Mennonite and Cary Beahm from Roanoke.

Brianne Comden, from Mary Washington and the Capital Athletic Conference, rounds out the first team.

The second team has representatives from the ODAC, the CAC, the CIAA and the USA South. Sophomore Samm Chandler, from Averett, is that USA South rep as she joins Bridgewater's Cassidy Burkholder, Sam Porter from Christopher Newport and Lynchburg's Chaney Forbush in addition to Virginia Union's Walker.

The 10 All-State honorees feature one National Player of the Year, one Academic All-America of the Year, four All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans, two Josten's Award finalists, two league Players of the Year and one league defensive Player of the Year.
