UMW Women's Basketball Tops Penn State Harrisburg, 67-49, in Regular Season Finale

Sophomore forward Taylor Barton scored 20 points off the bench to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 67-49 win at Penn State-Harrisburg University on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles improve to 21-4 on the season and 15-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play to secure the third seed in next week's conference tournament.

In the early going, the two teams exchanged buckets, with the Lions holding a 12-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles responded in the second, locking down defensively and only giving up six points. Strong play from Barton and Megan Green helped give the Eagles to a 23-18 lead going into the half.

In the third, Kendall Parker scored at the 5:13 mark to give the Eagles a 31-25 lead. UMW then went on an 18-5 run to increase their lead to 19 points.  A well balanced attack in the third of Barton, Parker, Elizabeth Dofflemyer, and Brianne Comden, each contributed six points.

Penn State-Harrisburg cut the deficit to 14 at the beginning of the fourth, but UMW responded and quickly pushed the lead back up to 24, their largest of the game, at the 2:52 mark from a Parker three pointer. The Eagles and Lions each scored in the final seconds to close out the game at 67-49.

Barton scored 20 points on 8-11 shooting from the field, while Parker went  4-9 from the field for 11 points. Megan Green hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds.

The Eagles shot an impressive 53.1% from the field (26-49), making 7-17 three pointers and 8-11 free throws. The Lions shot 32.1% from the field (18-56), making 7-22 three pointers and 6-12 free throws. The Eagles held a 36-28 advantage on the boards and forced 15 Lion turnovers.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday at 6:00 pm for the first round of the CAC Tournament, as they play host to sixth seeded St. Mary's College in the Ron Rosner Arena.
