UMW Women's Basketball Tops Southern Va., 85-45, in Home Regular Season Finale

Senior Sarah Listenbee recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and three others scored 14 apiece to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to an 85-45 victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 20-4 overall and 14-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play, and reach 20 wins for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons.

The Eagles started with a flourish, making 13-20 field goals in the opening 10 minutes. UMW scored the first 13 points, led by five points from Elizabeth Dofflemyer and four from Brianne Comden. After a Southern Va. three pointer, Kendall parker connected for a three pointer, and later hit a layup to push the score to 20-3 with 4:22 left in the first quarter. The lead reached 18 on a Parker three pointer moments later, and after the Knights cut the deficit to 12, the Eagles scored six straight, and led by 17, 33-16, after one frame.

UMW opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run, with Kelsey Dean scoring a pair of buckets and Parker adding a three pointer. By the midway point of the quarter, UMW led by 30, on a Brianne Comden layup, 48-18. Parker capped th half with another three, and UMW held a 53-19 lead at halftime. The Eagle bench contributed 12 points in the quarter.

The teams traded points throughout the third, until a Meghan Comer layup upped the lead to 66-25 to cap a 6-0 run with 2:55 remaining. Listenbee capped the scoring with a jumper with 15 seconds left, and UMW led, 72-31, after three.

Listenbee made two straight to open the fourth, and a Megan Green three pointer gave the Eagles an 81-33 lead with 5:40 left. The Knights answered with eight straight, and the finnal margin stood at 40 at the final horn.

Mary Washington was led by Comden, Dofflemyer, and Parker, who each scored 14, while Listenbee had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Merideth Oullette had 11 points for Southern Virginia.

The Eagles shot 49.3% from the field (34-69), making 7-19 three pointers and 10-12 free throws. Southern Virginia shot 25.5% (14-55), making 4-15 three pointers and 13-20 free throws. The Eagles controlled the boards, 52-27.

Mary Washington will close the regular season on Saturday at Penn State-Harrisburg at 1:00 p.m.
