Comden, Listenbee Lead UMW Women Past Salisbury, 79-53

Junior center Brianne Comden scored 21 points and senior forward Sarah Listenbee added 20 to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 79-53 victory at Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 18-3 on the season, and 12-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Sea Gulls took charge in the first quarter, jumping out to a 5-2 lead and maintained the advantage throughout the quarter. The first 10 minutes was a virtual one-player show for the Eagles, as Listenbee made 5-5 shots en route to 12 of the Eagles' 14 points in the quarter.

In the second, the Eagles erupted for a 27-11 advantage to lead, 41-26, at halftime. The Eagles immediately took the lead in the second, using an 8-0 run to open the quarter to take a 22-15 advantage. Comden made a pair of baskets, one to start the run, and one to finish it.

After a Sea Gull basket, back to back three pointers from McKenzie Jenkins and Megan Green vaulted the lead to 11, at 33-22, with 3:15 remaining. The Eagles ended the quarter with a three pointer from Jenkins and three free throws from sophomore Kendall Parker to head to halftime with a 41-26 advantage.

Two minutes into the third quarter, UMW used a 15-0 spurt to run the lead to 30. Comden scored six in the streak, which took two minutes off the clock, while Listenbee sparked the run with four points to get the run started. Comden hit a pair of baskets down the strecth to close the frame, and the Eagles approached the fourth quarter with a 73-43 lead.

Comden made 21 points on 9-14 shooting from the field, while Listenbee shot 8-10 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. Jenkins added 13 off the bench, while Dofflemyer had eight points on 4-4 shooting and five rebounds.

The Eagles shot a blistering 59.9% from the field (29-49), making 4-9 three point attempts and 17-20 free throws. Salisbury shot 44.9% (22-49), making 4-10 three pointers and 5-6 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounding, 26-21, and forced 24 Sea Gull turnovers.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Christopher Newport University at 5:30 p.m. in a key contest at the top of the league standings.
