Comden's Career-High 28 Leads UMW Women Past Frostburg, 88-46

Junior center Brianne Comden scored a career-high 28 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to an 88-46 win over visiting Frostburg State University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 14-3 on the season, and 8-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles jumped ahead quickly, scoring the first 13 points of the game, including seven from Comden and four from senior forward Sarah Listenbee. After the Bobcats scored a basket, Comden added two more, raising the lead to 17-2, and raising her scoring total to 11 with 5:25 left in the first.

Leading 20-5 with 1:44 to go in the frame, UMW closed the quarter with a 9-0 run, with Megan Green capping the scoring with a three pointer at the buzzer. UMW led after 10 minutes, 29-5.

After another Comden basket opened the second, FSU cut the deficit to 20, at 31-11, with 7:17 left, but the Eagles used a basket from Meghan Comer and a three pointer from McKenzie Jenkins to lift the margin to 37-11 with 5:45 to go.

The UMW lead swelled to 33 thanks to an 8-0 run, keyed by three point plays from Listenbee and Elizabeth Dofflemyer. The Eagles carried a 49-17 lead to intermission.

In the third, the Bobcats scored 16 points, but the Eagles netted 22 in the period, led by three consecutive three pointers from sophomore Kendall Parker, with Comden adding five. The lead swelled to 38, at 71-33, after three.

A pair of Comden three point plays raised the margin to 79-34 with 4:36 to go, and the teams traded baskets down the stretch, with UMW taking the 42-point win, 88-46.

Comden scored 28 points, breaking her previous career high of 27, shooting 11-16 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line, and added six rebounds. Listenbee reached doule figures with 11 points on 5-9 shooting, and Parker scored 11 as well.

The Eagles shot a robust 53.2% from the field (33-62), making 7-19 three pointers and 15-20 free throws. Frostburg shot 26% (13-50), with 2-10 shooting on three pointers and 18-28 on free throws. The eagles controlled the boards, 44-29.

Mary Washington will play again at home on Saturday, hosting Wesley College at 1:00 p.m., with the alumni game to precede the affair. UMW women's basketball alumnus Erin Caulfield Hough will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday as well, with a Q&A open to the basketball attendees at 11 am.
