Comden's 25 Points Lead UMW Women's Basketball Past Wesley, 68-41

Junior center Brianne Comden scored 25 points, and the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team held host Wesley College scoreless in the first quarter in a 68-41 Eagle victory on Wednesday night in Dover, Del. The Eagles improve to 10-2 overall, and 4-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In the first quarter, the Eagles held Wesley scoreless on 0-13 shooting, while Comden and senior forward Sarah Listenbee combined to hit all seven of their shots, giving the Eagles a 16-0 lead after 10 minutes. In all-UMW went 8-12 from the floor in the opening stanza.

In the second, Listenbee opened the scoring, before Wesley scored its first basket. Comden answered with a three-point play, sparking a 22-point second quarter for UMW. Sophomore Taylor Barton led the Eagles with five points in the quarter, as the Eagles made nine of 16 shots. The Eagles led, 38-9, at halftime.

Comden was the story in the third quarter, making 5-6 field goals and 4-5 free throws for 14 of UMW's 20 points, equalling Wesley's scoring total for the frame. UMW led, 58-23, entering the fourth quarter.

Wesley turned things around in the fourth, outscoring the Eagles, 18-10, as UMW saw 11 players see time.

Comden made 10-14 field goals and 5-6 free throws en route to 25 points, while Listenbee made 5-7 shots to finish with 10 points, and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Brionna Johnson had 18 for Wesley.

The Eagles shot 50% from the floor (27-54), and went 0-11 on three pointers, but connected on 14-18 free throws. Wesley shot 22.2% (14-63), with 4-26 effort on three pointers and 9-15 from the free throw line. The Eagles led in assists, 19-6.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Salisbury University in a rematch of last year's CAC Championship at the Ron Rosner Arena.
