Dofflemyer's Double-Double Lifts UMW Women Past Shenandoah, 61-34

Freshman guard Elizabeth Dofflemyer achieved team highs with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals in leading the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 61-34 victory over Shenandoah University on Monday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 9-2 on the season.

The Eagles picked up on Monday where they left off in Saturday's 74-24 win over Frostburg, allowing just 12 first half points. Dofflemyer opened the game with a three pointer, and was followed by another three from senior guard Megan Green. Dofflemyer added a free throw and senior forward Sarah Listenbee a basket to up the lead to 9-0 before the Hornets found the hoop on a three pointer with 7:27 left in the first quarter.

Dofflemyer answered with a three, and the Eagles connected on three free throws to lead, 15-3,before a Hornets basket with 4:28 left cut the score to 15-5. After a jumper from sophomore Taylor Barton, the teams traded baskets before UMW closed the quarter with six straight, including four from Listenbee, to lead, 25-7, after 10 minutes.

The Eagles held the Hornets scoreless for nearly seven minutes to open the second, with five different players scoring 14 points. Freshman Meghan Comer's three pointer with 1:59 left gave UMW a 42-9 lead, and the Hornets hit a three in the final minute to cut the haftime score to 42-12.

In the third, junior center Brianne Comden hit the first two baskets, and while the offense sputtered briefly, the defense was equal to the task, as UMW held the Hornets to nine points, extending their streak of holding an opponent to single digits in seven straight quarters. UMW led, 48-21, after three.

The teams opened the fourth trading buckets, and continued to throughtout the frame, with each team scoring 13 points, including points from six different Eagles.

Dofflemyer scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting, including a pair of three pointers and free throws. She had 10 rebounds (four on offense), and added four steals. Barton had 11 points, making 4-5 field goals, while Comden and Listenbee each had 10. Megan Green had seven assists and three steals.

The Eagles shot 48.1% from the field (25-52), making 4-14 three pointers and 7-10 free throws. Shenandoah shot 30% (12-40), with 5-14 shooting on three pointers and 5-9 at the free throw line. The Eagles led in rebounds, 33-26, and forced 25 Hornet turnovers.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Wesley College at 6:00 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference action.
