UMW Women's Basketball Rips Frostburg St., 74-24, on Saturday in CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington women's basket ball team erupted to a 23-2 first quarter advantage, and cruised to a 74-24 victory at Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action in Western Maryland. The Eagles improve to 8-2 on the season, and 3-1 in league play.

The Eagles scored the first two baskets, with junior Brianne Comden making a pair of layups. After a Bobcat basket, UMW scored the final 19 points of the frame. Freshman McKenzie Jenkins hit a pair of three pointers in succession in the run, and Comden chipped in with three baskets, including the capper with four seconds left in the first.

In the second quarter, UMW outscored the Bobcats, 19-8, as sophomore Taylor Barton scored eight points in the frame, and Jenkins added four to go with a three pointer and may in from freshman Meghan Comer. The Eagles led, 42-10, at halftime.

The Eagles held an 18-6 advantage in the third quarter. UMW used a balanced attack offensively, with freshman Elizabeth Dofflemyer leading the way with six points.

In the fourth, UMW outscored the Bobcats, 14-8, marking the first time since the game's return to four quarters that the Eagles have held an opponent to single digits in all four quarters of a game. Five different players scored in the fourth for the Eagles, led by Kelsey Dean's six points.

Comden led Mary Washington with 16 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. Jenkins scored 14 points off the bench on 5-6 shooting, including a pair of three pointers. Barton was the third Eagle in double figures with 10 points on 4-6 shooting. Dofflemyer led the Eagles with 12 rebounds, while senior guard Megan Green had 10 assists and eight rebounds at the point guard position. The Eagles blocked nine shots in the game.

UMW shot 43.3% from the field (29-67), making 4-13 three pointers and 12-14 free throws. Frostburg shot just 11.1% from the field (7-63), making 2-18 three pointers and 8-12 free throws. UMW held a commanding lead on the boards with a 58-39 rebounding edge, and led, 15-3, in points off of turnovers.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday evening when they host Shenandoah University at 5:00 p.m. in the final nonconference game of the year.
