UMW Women's Basketball Falls for First Time; 55-49, at York on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team saw its six-game undefeated streak to start the season come to a close in a 55-49 loss at York College on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. Senior guard Megan Green led the Eagles with 14 points.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a Kendall Parker basket, but the Spartnas answered with nine straight points to take a 9-2 advantage with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter. Layups by Sarah Listenbee and Brianne Comden cut the deficit to 11-6, but York answered with a three pointer to end the quarter with a 14-6 lead.

UMW immediately cut into the deficit in the second, as Listenbee and Megan Comer hit baskets to cut the deficit to four. A Parker three pointer later cut the deficit to three, and UMW used a Green jumper to move the score to 19-17 with 4:19 left.

Comden closed the half with a layup and a three pointer to leave the margin at two, 26-24, in favor of the Spartans at intermission.

The Spartans used a 13-7 advantage in the third quarter to pull away, leading 39-31 after three quarters. After York hit a pair of free throws to start the fourth, Green hit a pair of three pointers to cut the deficit to 44-37 with 5:23 remaining.

York led by 10 at 50-40 with 1:45 to play, and the Eagles used late three point plays from Comden and Green to cut the score to 51-46 with 1:01 left, but York answered with four straight free throws in the last minute before Green ended the scoring with another three.

Green led the Eagles with 14 points on 5-9 shooting, including 4-7 on three pointers, and added five rebounds and four steals. Comden went 5-9 from the field en route to 13 points to go with seven rebounds, and Listenbee scored 12 points to go with nine rebounds and five blocks.

The Eagles shot 20-63 from the floor (31.7%), making 6-24 three pointers and 3-9 free throws. York shot 14-47 from the field (29.8%), making 5-15 three pointers and 22-29 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 43-38.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Thursday when they take on Randolph-Macon College at 11:00 a.m. in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
