Parker's 22 Points Lead UMW Women's Basketball Past Penn State Harrisburg, 79-55

Sophomore guard Kendall Parker scored a game-high 22 points, while senior guard Megan Green scored 15 and freshman Elizabeth Dofflemyer added 14 as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Penn State-Harrisburg, 79-55, on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles extend their season opening win streak to six, and improve to 2-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

PSU Harrisburg scored six straight points after UMW opened with the first five of the game to take a 6-5 lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Dofflemyer and Parker each scored a pair of points to give UMW a 9-6 advantage, but the Lions battled back again to tie the score at 11 with 2:17 left. Parker hit three free throws after being fouled, and then added a long-range three to close the quarter to give the Eagles a 17-11 advantage.

In the second, UMW built the lead to 15, at 31-16, as five players scored in a 12-0 run. Harrisburg responded with 10 straight points to cut the deficit to 31-26, with 1:53 to play. Dofflemyer tyhen scored five of the last seven points of the half to give UMW a 38-27 halftime lead.

The Eagles built the lead to 15 in the third quarter before six straight Lion points cut the deficit to single digits at 46-37 with 5:12 to play. A Parker three pointer kickstarted a run that would give the Eagles a 13-point lead after three, 55-42. 

In the fourth, the Lions scored the first basket, but then UMW scored 15 straight, capped by a Brianne Comden layup with 4:29 to play, to give the Eagles a 70-44 cushion. A pair of Alannah Miller free throws swelled the lead to 29, at 77-48, and a Courtney Radcliff basket capped the scoring in a 79-55 Eagle win.

Parker led all scorers with 22 points on 5-12 shooting, including three three pointers, and she went 9-10 from the free throw line. Megan Green scored 15 points on 5-18 shooting, making 4-6 three pointers, and added seven assists. Dofflemyer scored 14 on 4-8 shooting from the floor, with three three pointers and went 4-4 from the line. Kiara Carter hjad 10 for PSU Harrisburg.

The Eagles shot 40% from the field (22-55), making 9-21 three pointers and 26-33 free throws. Penn State Harrisburg shot 28.8% (19-66), with 2-17 on three pointers and 15-23 free throws. The Lions led in rebounds, 54-35, while the Eagles forced 31 turnovers.

Mary Washington will be back in action next Saturday when they visit York College of Pa. at 1:00 p.m.
