UMW Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten with 67-45 Win Over St. Mary's in CAC Opener

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team saw 11 players reach the scoring column in a balanced attack to defeat St. Mary's College, 67-45, in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener at Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season.

The first quarter went back and forth, with both teams struggling to find baskets. The Seahawks scored the first four points, and led, 4-3, with 4:14 remaining. A three point play from freshman McKenzie Jenkins gave the Eagles a 6-4 lead, but the Seahawks tied the score at 6-6, and again at 8-8 after a Megan Green jumper. UMW scored four straight, and led, 12-10, after one.

The second quarter was all Eagles, as UMW scored the first 17 points of the frame, and outscored the visitors, 19-2, in the quarter. Freshman Jordan Pamlanye led the Eagles with four points in the run, while Jenkins and Taylor Barton each had three. UMW led, 31-12, at halftime.

A layup from senior Sarah Listenbee and a three pointer from Elizabeth Dofflemyer upped the Eagle lead to 36-12 with 7:23 left in the quarter, and three free throws from Kendall Parker gave UMW a 26-point lead at 49-23 with 2:44 to go. A Brianne Comden layup capped the scoring for the quarter, with UMW leading, 53-30, entering the fourth quarter.

After four Comden points put UMW up by 26 with 7:31 left, the Seahawks gradually closed the gap to 19 in the final minute, but sophomore Kelsey Dean scored a three point play with 37 seconds left to give UMW a 67-45 win.

Comden led the Eagles with 10 points, while Barton scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds to go with three assists and two steals. Listenbee had eight points and eight rebounds, with three assists and five steals.

UMW shot 42.9% from the field (21-49), including 4-12 on three pointers, and made 21-27 free throws. St. Mary's shot 23.2% (13-56), making 6-27 three pointers and 13-21 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 44-33.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host Penn State-Harrisburg at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC game. Saturday is Camper Day for the Eagles' doubleheader with the Lions.
