Comden, Dofflemyer Lead UMW Women Past Virginia Wesleyan, 67-50

Junior center Brianne Comden scored a game-high 24 points, and freshman guard Elizabeth Dofflemyer scored a career-high 21 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 67-50 victory at Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday evening in Virginia Beach. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

For the fourth consecutive game, Mary Washington limited its opponent to less than 10 points in the first quarter, racing out to a 16-4 lead after 10 minutes. The Marlins responded in the second quarter, capitalizing on several UMW turnovers and ending the half on a 12-1 run to draw to within three at halftime, at 28-25.

The Eagles returned to form in the third, outscoring the Marlins, 23-15. The Marlins tied the score on a pair of three pointers midway through the quarter, but UMW answered with a 15-4 run, including nine points from Dofflemyer. UMW finished the fourth with a 16-10 advantage in the fourth.

Comden scored 24 points in 21 minutes, on 8-12 shooting from the floor and 8-9 from the free throw line. Dofflemyer scored 21 points in 29 minutes, making 7-13 shots, including 2-5 three pointers, and connected on 5-5 free throws, and tied for the team lead with 11 rebounds with freshman Jordan Pamlanye.

The Eagles shot 42.6% from the field (23-54), including 3-13 three pointers and 18-24 free throws. Va. Wesleyan shot 29.1% from the field (16-55), making 6-26 three pointers and 12-16 free throws. The Eagles held a commanding lead in rebounds, 49-22, while both teams had 11 steals.

Mary Washington will return to action next Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 6:00 p.m. at the Ron Rosner Arena.
