UMW Women's Basketball Tops Marymount, 60-46, in CAC Semifinal

Four players reached double figures as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team limited Marymount University to 12 field goals in a 60-46 victory in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Thursday night at the Anderson Center.

The play stayed close from the opening tip, as Marymount climbed to an 8-4 lead with 12:47 to play in the first half, as both teams struggled from the floor. A three pointer from Claire Haeuptle cut the deficit to one, and a free throw from Brianne Comden tied the score with 9:51 left.

The Saints then scored four straight but UMW answered with a pair of free throws from Erin Drumheller and another Haeuptle three to take their first lead at 13-12 with 7:51 remaining in the half. After both teams scored baskets, The Saints hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 16 with 4:46 to play.

The Eagles then erupted with an eight point run, including six free throws from Drumheller, to lead 24-16 with 2:41 to play. The Saints scored the last five of the half, however, to cut the halftime deficit to 24-21.

After Marymount opened the second half with a three pointer to tie the score, UMW scored seven straight, with Haeuptle hitting a three and Comden and Caitlin Ciniero adding buckets to give UMW a 31-24 advantage with 16:55 to play.

A three pointer from Marymount cut the Eagle lead to 31-28 with 14:28 to go, but Haeuptle answered with another three pointer, spurring an 8-0 run to give UMW a 39-28 lead with with 10:46 to go.

The Saints trimmed the lead to seven, at 41-34, with 6:04 to play, but UMW was able to answer by moving the lead to 17, 54-37, thanks in part to four points from Aubrey Howland and another Haeuptle three.

The Saints would come no closer than 12 the rest of the way, as the Eagles sank free throws down the stretch to claim a 14-point win, for their 20th of the season.

The Eagles shot 34.6% from the field (18-52), making 5-16 three pointers, and went 19-33 from the line. Marymount shot 12-52 from the field (23.1%), making 6-25 three pointers, and made 19-26 free throws. UMW dominated the boards, 52-33.

Haeuptle led UMW with 16 points, while Ciniero added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Drumheller added 13 as well. Comden was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 12 points.

The Eagles will advance to the CAC Championship on Saturday. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
