UMW Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season With 66-60 Win at Wesley Behind Comden's 29

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball overcame a three-point halftime deficit to defeat Wesley College, 66-60, in the regular season finale on Saturday in Dover, Delaware. The Eagles move to 19-6 overall and 15-3 in CAC play.

Wesley came out strong, holding the lead through the first 10 minutes of the game, until a free throw from senior Caitlin Ciniero with 9:50 left gave UMW its first lead, at 14-13. The lead would change hands five times over the next six minutes, with Wesley sinking a pair of free throws with 3:15 left to take a 27-25 lead. Another free throw in the final seconds gave Wesley a 28-25 halftime advantage.

In the second half, UMW started with three straight interior baskets, with two from Brianne Comden and one from Taylor Barton, to take a 31-28 lead. Wesley answered with three straight three pointers to take a 37-33 lead with 17:19 remaining, but UMW tied the score at 38 on another Ciniero free throw, and gained the lead on another Comden basket with 12:48 to play.

Wesley connected on another two three pointers to lead 46-45 with 10:14 left, but a 10-0 UMW run, keyed by four points from Ciniero and four from Sarah Listenbee gave the Eagles a 55-46 with 7:03 left.

The Eagles led by nine, 62-53, with 1:50 left, but Wesley scored six straight to cut the deficit to three at 62-59 with 37 seconds left. Senior Erin Drumheller hit a pair of free throws to extand the lead to five, and, after Wesley made one of two free throws, Drumheller and Ciniero made free throws to cap the scoring at 66-60.

Comden scored a career-high 29 points for the Eagles on 14-19 shooting, and added 10 rebounds, as the lone Eagle in double figures.

UMW shot 25-52 from the field (48.1%), making 2-9 three pointers and 14-27 free throws. Wesley shot 17-53 from the field (32.1%), making 10-25 three pointers and 16-21 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 44-28.

Mary Washington will host a CAC Tournament semifinal on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. against either the third or sixth seeded team.
