Balanced Effort Leads Strong Offensive Output as Women's Basketball Tops Southern Va., 97-59

Five players reached double figures as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 97-59, on Wednesday night in the regular season home finale. The Eagles improve to 18-6 overall, and 14-3 in CAC play.

The Eagles opened with a hot shooting touch, building a 21-5 lead with 15:22 left in the first half. Sophomore Brianne Comden scored eight points in the early run. Back to back three pointers started a Knights run that cut the score to 25-23 with 9:17 left in the frame.

Southern Virginia hit another three pointer to tie score at 28-28 with 6:19 remaining, but the Eagles went on a 17-2 run, keyed by a pair of Claire Haeuptle three pointers. A late basket from senior Caitlin Ciniero gave the Eagles a 51-32 halftime lead.

Haeuptle, Aubrey Howland, and Ciniero opened the second half with baskets to build the Eagle lead to 58-34, and a Howland free throw with 11:42 left pushed the lead to 72-40. The Knights cut the deficit to 75-50, but a 15-2 Eagle spurt upped the lead to 90-52 with 6:40 remaining. Seven points from freshman Kendall Parker led the run.

The Knights scored six straight points, but Parker scored five more to push the lead to 95-58, and a late basket from Kiana Smith capped the scoring with UMW coming away with a 97-59 victory.

Mary Washington shot 50.7% from the field (38-75), making 8-17 three pointers and 13-19 free throws. Southern Virginia shot 32.1% (18-56), making 9-23 three pointers and 14-22 free throws. The Eagles controlled the boards, 53-30, and forced 20 Southern Virginia turnovers.

Parker led all scorers with 21 points, making 8-14 shots, including 3-6 three pointers, to lead five Eagles in double figures. Haeuptle scored 19 points, while Comden scored 16, Ciniero added 12, and Howland scored 11 for UMW. Erin Drumheller scored five points to go with six assists and four steals in her final regular season home game. UMW tallied 25 assists in the game.

The Eagles, who clinch the second seed in next week's CAC tournament, will end the regular season on Saturday at Wesley College at 1:00 p.m.
