UMW Women's Basketball Tops Penn State-Harrisburg, 76-41, in Saturday CAC Tilt

Sophomore center Brianne Comden scored a game-high 20 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 76=41 win at Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 11-4 overall, and 7-1 in CAC play.

The Eagles jumped ahead early with six straight points, and held a 10-2 lead with four minutes gone by. The Eagles pushed the lead to as many as 10, but the Lions held tight, cutting the defricit to as few as three in the next eight minutes.

Senior Claire Haeuptle hit a three pointer with 5:16 remaining to lift the Eagle lead to 26-20, and a pair of baskets from junior Sarah Listenbee and a pair of free throws from freshman Taylor Barton gave UMW a 32-22 advantage with 1:10 remaining in the half.

Listenbee hit a pair of free throws to end the first half scoring, with UMW holding a 34-24 lead.

In the second half, the Eagles' offense and defense shone brightly, as the Eagles outscored the guests, 42-17. UMW used a 10-1 run out of the locker room to lead, 44-25, with 15:32 left. Senior Caitlin Ciniero capped the run with a pair of baskets.

The Eagles continued to score, as Kaayla Parks and Listenbee hit baskets while the defense held, and UMW's lead swelled to 52-29 with 11:52 remaining. A pair of Comden baskets pushed the lead to 63-34 with 7:21 left, and another four straight points from Comden made the score 68-34 with 6:05 on the clock.

From there, freshmen Kiana Smith and Kendall Parker added baskets, and the Eagles finished with a 76-41 victory.

UMW shot 39.7% (27-68), making 4-13 three pointers and 18-26 free throws. Penn State Harrisburg shot 24.4% (11-45), with 3-16 three pointers, and made 16-25 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounding, 44-34, and forced 22 turnovers while committing just 10.

Comden shot 7-16 from the floor and 6-6 from the free throw line en route to her 20 points, while Listenbee scored 12 and Barton 10 for UMW.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday night when they visit Christopher Newport University at 5:30 p.m. in a key CAC matchup.
